It All Makes Sense Now

Commuting to and from work, I wore my peach ballet flats. The rest of my color choices didn’t really make sense until I got to work and slipped on these floral peep-toes.

Jacket, Charlotte Russe (dyed). Dress, Merona (shortened). Blouse, Charlotte Russe. Shoes, Nine West. Purse, Simply Vera. Earrings, Night Owl Crafts. Bracelets, vintage, Claire’s, and Mixit.

Here are all of the outfits, so far, that didn’t quite “go” until I added these shoes:

Mostly, it seems I use these shoes as a way to tie in my vintage coral and turquoise earrings.

Utility

I don’t often use the word “practical” on this blog, but today’s outfit is 100% utilitarian. I had another packed schedule: work, swim practice, and a film festival. The boots kept me dry and comfortable as I hiked to and from the bus stops and across the UC campus. The hat hid my post-swimming hair. And the unrestrictive clothing allowed me to move quickly and sling a backpack over my shoulders.

Hat, Target. Cardigan, Rodarte for Target. Dress, swap. Belt, thrifted. Boots, Dan Post. Earrings, Night Owl Crafts. Necklace, Phai’s House of Jade.

Minimalist

This look is pretty minimal for me. Minimal colors (three). Minimal layers (blazer + dress). Minimal fuss on a day that consisted of 8 hours at the office, teaching boot camp class, dinner out, and the VitaminWater uncapped fashion show. My schedule is certainly not minimal.

Blazer, vintage. Dress, Richard Chai for Target. Shoes, J Crew. Bag, faux D&G (thrifted). Sunglasses, Xhilaration. Necklace, Target. Bracelets, vintage, World Market, and Fort.

Ugly Beauty

Maggie, of Dimestore Diamond, inspired me to treat this sleeveless dress as a jumper and layer a shirt underneath.

I was reaching for a sheer, aqua* blouse to wear under the splotched dress, when I spotted a dress-turned-into-a-shirt patterned in shades of turquoise, olive, and brown. I placed the two printed items side by side and thought “it just might be ugly enough to work.”

Dress and bag, Mossimo. Shirt, INC (hacked from a swapped dress). Belt, H&M. Shoes, J Crew. Bracelets, vintage, World Market, and Fort. Earrings, Monica D. Ring, vintage.

*Maggie also inspired my past pairings of blue-green with this dress. She owns it in solid olive and has accessorized it with a turquoise belt.

Street Smarts

I’m feeling smart, today. I wore all cotton to beat the heat and a hat to keep the sun off my face. I even looked both ways before I crossed the street.

That Lace Mossimo Skirt

A good percentage of the style diary bloggers out there bought this little lace skirt from Target. I don't blame them. Who could resist this simple, but girly, number? Especially when it went on clearance for $5.25? Or even better, yet, once it showed up at Goodwill?

Hi Kasmira!

I just snagged a lace skirt exactly like yours (Target brand, maybe Mossimo?).......

Anyhoo, would you possibly do a post on what you like to wear with the lace skirt? I am considering a faded denim skirt, but that almost seems so obvious.

Reva

Honestly, I forgot all about this skirt, until Reva reminded me. I hadn’t worn it since February, because, even though it’s adorable, I find a little difficult to style. The elastic waist, while comfortable, is unflattering. The skirt’s “pooch” is emphasized by knit tees and tanks. In the winter, I obscured the waistline with sweaters. For summer, the only viable option seems to be a woven shirt. Denim, if you’ve got it. (I don’t. But light blue and white pinstripes are a close visual approximation.)

Shirt, Converse One Star (thrifted). Skirt and bag, Mossimo. Sandals, Aerosoles. Earrings, No Boundaries. Necklace, gift from The Magpie’s Daughter (I’m sorry his sweet little owl face isn’t visible in the photos!) Rings, vintage and shopgoodwill.com. Slave bracelet, vintage.

I wore my shirt knotted and tried to love the elastic waist. No dice. Next time, I’ll wear the shirt untucked, unknotted, and maybe belted.

If you’ve got this skirt, how do you style it? Do you tuck your top in? Obscure the elastic with a belt? Embrace the pooch?

I've Always Been a Morning Person

…a morning girl. Hooray!

However, I’m feeling less like a morning girl after staying up to watch Falling Skies. It kept me up past my bedtime (10 p.m. – yes, I’m an old lady) and gave me wicked weird dreams.

I’m compensating with lots of coffee and a shirt (really a dress) featuring multi-colored coffee beans.

Dress (worn as a shrit), Eddie Bauer (thrifted). Skirt, Talbot’s. Belt, H&M. Shoes, J Crew. Bag, Charming Charlie. Gold-tone cuff, Modcloth. Leather cuff, Epcot Canada. Watch, Raymond Weil. Earrings, (Into) the Fray.
