LGTMAS: Choose Your Favorite Style

I hope you enjoyed The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style series as much as I did! My creativity was taxed by some of the styles, but I got a better understanding of my own preferences along the way. I was particularly intrigued by the Rock and Roll and Bohemian styles and plan to incorporate more elements of both into my everyday wardrobe. (Hot Topic and World Market, here I come!)

LGTMAS: Bohemian

Jacket, Dex (via swap). Dress, Jovovich Hawk for Target. Tights, Target. Boots, White Mountain. Scarf, Camp Foster “mall” (with tassels added by me). Bag, MCI (thrifted).

Is it terribly vain if I say I LOVE this outfit? Every single piece of it is one of my current favorites.

I hesitated to wear this to work because it seems awfully casual. But it’s my last day in the office this year, so it’s kind of like the ultimate casual Friday. Compared to all the light-wash jeans I’ll see at work today, I’ll be dressed up.

Inspiration from the book:

Today is the last day of the Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style series. I’d like to ask YOU to nominate a Bohemian Lucky Blogger Girl (or Boy). I’m excited to see who you’ll pick.

LGTMAS: Gamine

Sweater, Moda International. Turtleneck, Merona. Skirt, Herman Geist (thrifted and shortened). Tights, Danskin. Loafers, American Eagle for Payless.

This outfit kind of makes me want to throw up. It is too much girlishness.

I’m not really a fan of gamine – mostly because I dislike flats. I’ve only worn flats to work a handful of times since beginning this blog.

In fact, these red peep-toes are the only dressy flats I own.

The Gamine chapter of The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style wasn’t very helpful. From what I gathered there, gamine style = dressy clothes you can wear while riding your bike. (Hence, the flats.) Nadine of Strawberry Kitten, my Gamine Lucky Blogger Girl, is far more inspirational than the book. Not only does she does ride her bike wearing her cute ensembles, but she does it in heels.

LGTMAS: American Classic

Jacket, Forever 21 (overdyed by me). Sweater vest, Cherokee. Button-down shirt, Gap. Skirt, Willi Smith (thrifted and altered). Tights, Hue. Loafer wedges, American Eagle for Payless. Bag, thrifted. Belt, thrifted. Earrings, Claire’s.

Generally, this style is a little too preppy for my tastes. I like most of the elements of the style, just not all of them together. I’d rather mix up the prepster pieces with something funkier.

I’m with Wendy B on the “crisp white shirt,” a mainstay of the American Classic style. It is not one of my wardrobe basics and it certainly doesn’t stay “crisp” for long!

Inspiration from The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style:

The American Classic Lucky Blogger Girl is Leslie of Cute on the Cheap. She does preppy nearly every day and it suits her well.

I'll be taking a break from the LGTMAS (Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style) series for the next two days. I, unfortunately, have some work events at which I do not wish to be dressed as Gamine or Bohemian. Especially since my Gamine outfit is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt and I'm questioning my own judgment on wearing my Bohemian ensemble to the office.

LGTMAS: California Casual

Poncho, Newport News. Blouse, from Japan. Corduroy pants, Old Navy. Purse, thrifted. Earrings, Panagea. Booties, Style & Co. Ring, Jan Michaels San Francisco.

Most of the California Casual looks were a bit chilly for December in Cincinnati. Tissue thin tees, cut-off shorts, and sandals weren’t going to work for me. I did find some inspiration in the below photos. My favorite definition of the style was “even at their fanciest, these are clothes that would be right at home at a beach bonfire.” I can see myself seated in the cool sand, listening to the surf, and warming my toes at a driftwood fire in this outfit. I might need to remove the heels, though.

Inspiration from the book:

I don’t follow many bloggers with such a casual, beachy style. The closest I can come to a California Casual Lucky Blogger Girl is Fia of The Laundry Narrative. Her outfit posts have been a bit sparse since she became pregnant, but a peek through her archives will show you her casual, light-handed style.

LGTMAS: Rock and Roll

Scarf, stolen from a play. Vest, H&M. Striped sweater, Banana Republic (thrifted). Tank, Charlotte Russe. Jeans, Express. Booties, Sigerson Morrison for Target. Bag, Bitten. Ring, Rafia & Boss. Necklace, Kenneth Cole Reaction.

This look was so much fun. I think I’m a convert. I’ll definitely be on the look out for edgier elements in my clothes and accessories, like studs, skulls, and black leather, in the future.

Inspiration from the book:

I’ve got TWO Rock and Roll Lucky Blogger Girls. The first is Sara of Waitin Round 2 be a Millionaire. I’ve copied her picture format today (with my own addition of a lighting effect). The next time I chop my hair off, I’m going to copy Sara’s do (including the platinum color). The second rock and roller’s style I admire is Erin of Work With What You’ve Got. I love how she can make edgy look so pretty. (And I want to steal her biker jacket.)

LGTMAS: Euro Chic

Fur collar, gift. Jacket, Odds ‘n Evens (thrifted). Dress, vintage and thrifted. Boots, Nine West. Bag, Crown Lewis (vintage). Belt, H&M. Ring, Rafia & Bossa.

Even after reading this section a few times, I couldn’t synthesize the ideas and suggested pieces into my own look. I just copied one straight from the How to Get the Look page:

Inspiration from the book:

In the end, I decided that Euro Chic was a sort of ladylike vintage look. Who better than Rhiannon of Liebe Marlene to be my Euro Chic Lucky Blogger Girl? Rhiannon has also had the honor of being featured in the actual Lucky magazine (August 2008) for her style.

LGTMAS: Arty Slick

Jacket and trousers, Forever 21. Sheer tank, Mossimo. Cami (under tank), Charlotte Russe. Lace-up pumps, Isaac Mizrahi for Target. Necklace, Xhilaration. Purse, thrifted.

Super arty slick, huh?

Arty slick means lots of black and details that are a little bit “off” – like asymmetrical hems, oversized collars, and exaggerated proportions. One of the most interesting things about the look is that it doesn’t follow conventional aesthetic standards. Interest has a higher desirability than beauty.

I struggled with this style because I don’t own any thing like the pieces pictured in the book, with the exception of the black trousers. I have no ragged hemmed chiffon tops or industrial inspired jewelry. Finally, the definition page’s description of “a collar with shape or volume” put me in mind of my funny little jacket. Still, I wasn’t sure I was arty slick until I stuck a paintbrush in my hair. Black = Slick. Paintbrush = Arty.

Inspiration from the book:

I have a hard time distinguishing between Arty Slick and Rock and Roll. I think that the Arty Slick individuals are actually grown up Rock and Rollers. At least that is the case of Queen Michelle, of Kingdom of Style, my Arty Slick Lucky Blogger Girl. She just posted her top 10 favorite outfits, so those new to the Kingdom can get a good idea of her Arty Slick style.
